Tafsir Muyassar :

94  They will make excuses to you when you have returned to them. Say, "Make no excuse - never will we believe you. Allah has already informed us of your news. And Allah will observe your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger; then you will be taken back to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."

95  They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them that you would leave them alone. So leave them alone; indeed they are evil; and their refuge is Hell as recompense for what they had been earning.

96  They swear to you so that you might be satisfied with them. But if you should be satisfied with them - indeed, Allah is not satisfied with a defiantly disobedient people.

97  The bedouins are stronger in disbelief and hypocrisy and more likely not to know the limits of what [laws] Allah has revealed to His Messenger. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.

98  And among the bedouins are some who consider what they spend as a loss and await for you turns of misfortune. Upon them will be a misfortune of evil. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

99  But among the bedouins are some who believe in Allah and the Last Day and consider what they spend as means of nearness to Allah and of [obtaining] invocations of the Messenger. Unquestionably, it is a means of nearness for them. Allah will admit them to His mercy. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Qiblatain Mosque in  Zeila, Somalia....5th oldest mosque in the world

The Migration to Abyssinia (Arabic: الهجرة إلى الحبشة‎, al-hijra ʾilā al-habaša), also known as the First Hegira (Arabic: هِجْرَة‎ hijrah), was an episode in the early history of Islam, where Prophet Muhammad's first followers (the Sahabah) fled from the persecution of the ruling Quraysh tribe of Mecca. They sought refuge in the Christian Kingdom of Aksum, present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea (formerly referred to as Abyssinia, a name derived from the Arabic Al-Habash),[1]in 9 BH (613 CE) or 7 BH (615 CE). The Aksumite monarch who received them is known in Islamic sources as the Negus (Arabic: نجاشي‎ najāšī)   Ashama ibn Abjar. Modern historians have alternatively identified him with King Armah and Ella Tsaham.[2] Some of the exiles returned to Mecca and made the hijra to Medina with Muhammad, while others remained in Abyssinia until they came to Medina in 628.

Al-Nejashi -- Precious but unrecognized African first Mosque

Al-Nejashi -- Precious but unrecognized African first Mosque

Al-Nejashio Mosque, located in Negash,  60 km east of Mekele, the capital of Tigray  state

Map of Ethiopia showing Negash, a small village located 60 km east of Mekele, the capital of Tigray  state.

Arguably, Ethiopia is nothing short of a miracle when  it comes to its numerous natural and man made tourist attraction sites. In  fact, the country  is described as home to the first human beings after the discovery of ancient human ancestor  Lucy (Dinkinesh) 43 years ago. And  that is why the  country has already crafted what  many believe is a  fitting  logo, which is  a 'Land of Origin' recently.

The country which is also known for its ancient civilization, has splendid landscape with breathtaking scenery. Ethiopia also remains to be on top of the list for its   UNESCO  registered tangible and intangible heritages.

Religious wise, scholars also believed that Ethiopia was the first African country where the  two major religions, Christianity and Islam  had been  practiced first.

Islam in Ethiopia dates back to the year 615 AD when the first Muslim, among them Prophet Mohammad’s wife came to Ethiopia as refugees  fleeing  suppression by the 'Quraish'. Out of the good gesture of the then Ethiopian King, they were warmly welcomed and given refuge at  Negash, a small village located 60 km east of Mekele, the capital of Tigray  state.

Though the Quraish sent emissaries to  take them back to Arabia, The Ethiopian  king  refused  to fulfill their  demands. Equally true,  inspired by the Ethiopian hospitality, Prophet himself instructed his followers who came to Ethiopia, to respect and protect Ethiopia as well as live in peace with Ethiopian Christians.

When exiled Muslims first arrived in the land of peace and justice, the then Christian king of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) welcomed them in a hospitable and heartfelt manner. He ordered his subjects to support the strangers by whatever they could. This magnificent scenario was used as a symbol of religious tolerance which had been depicting the assimilation, peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding between Muslims and Christians for  centuries. In addition to this, Ethiopia  was  the first country to allow Muslims to practice their faith without any obstacle.

Selahadin Eshetu (PhD), a Political Commentator, International Relations Expert and Writer described king Negash on his thesis entitled ''Authentic History of King Negash of Abyssinia" described Negash as humble and welcoming king who was able to create positive impression on Muslim followers about his country. He stated that having noticed the warm reception of his followers by Christian king, the Prophet of Islam ordered all Muslims not to declare Jihad on Ethiopia at any time. And since then the religion start to expand  and increase its followers in Ethiopia.

'' Primarily, what makes Islam peculiar in Ethiopia, unlike the rest of the world, is it was  preached, and accepted peacefully throughout the whole territory of the country. Secondly, Islam always co-existed in peace with other religions. That is why, one can find family members in Ethiopia, who exercise different religions in under the same roof,'' Selahadin noted.

Nowadays, the village of Negash or Nejashi, which hosts the first Muslim refugees in history  has a living witness, which is a 7th century-old  Al-Nejashio Mosque. The  mosque is as old as the faith of Islam in Ethiopia and is believed to be the first mosque in Africa. The mosque is considered by many as one of the most sacred places of Islamic worship and rightly dubbed by some as “The second Makkah”.  Many world leaders especially from Islamic countries have visited Al Nejashi and they have expressed their admiration to the deep history it holds. Sudanese President Omar Hassen Albeshar and Djiboutian President Ismael Omar Guile were among the high profile people who visited the Mosque.

Though it is one of the untapped  tourism potentials of the country, this ancient mosque was deprived of attention globally. However, in what could be said a  promising move, there  has been  some progress aimed to reinstate the Mosque to its proper status over the past couple of years. Having understanding its significance, the Tigray Culture and Tourism Bureau in collaboration with Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has been undertaking renovating works to make the historical mosque tourist destination. Tigray Culture and Tourism Bureau, Quality Assurance Conformity and Regulatory Head Yemane Gedlu told The Ethiopian Herald that the renovation process has been going on in two phases.

"Al Nejashi is now under renovation with a financial help from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA). The renovation is being carried out by both Turkish and Ethiopian engineers. The Tigray Culture and Tourism Bureau has been providing every necessary support for the project including allowing machinery to be imported tax free," Yemane said.

According to him, the internal  and external refurbishment process of the mosque has reached 95 per cent so far. Initiatives to inscribe the mosque as UNESCO's Tangible World Heritage would begin  soon.

In addition to this, shops, lounges, lavatories, hotels and restaurants would be constructed around the mosque to provide service for tourists and to create job opportunity for the nearby society, the Head pointed out.

TIKA’s Country Coordinator for Ethiopia, Ismail Durhat on his part  said that  Nejashi would increase the tourist flow of the country.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to give this iconic Islamic monument the renovation it deserves. We hope this Islamic heritage would play significant role in the Ethiopian tourism development,” he said.

Durhat underlined that the site remains a functioning mosque in which Muslims still perform prayers while the renovation process going on, adding, the renovations would also include construction of smooth track to ease access for those with disabilities.

Tigray State’s Supreme Council Islamic Affairs President Sheikh Adem Abdulkadir,  said the regional state government and local inhabitants were pleased about the restoration effort.

“Ramadan (the Islamic fasting month, which began July 18) is a month of compassion,” he said, adding “So we are doubly blessed by the current effort to renovate the ancient mosque, which has long served as a repository of  Islam.”

Currently, the small village of Nejashi has posed itself to be the center of Islam in Ethiopia. Upon completion of the renovation process and other infrastructure developments, Al Nejashi will be expected to boost its status and recognition to the international level. The Ethiopian government and other concerning bodies are working hand in hand for further enhancement of the site. If the efforts undergoing become fruitful, the Mosque could be registered as UNESCO's Tangible World Heritage. If so,  there is no way that it  would  not be serving as a pilgrimage site  by the Islamic world.

Historic city of Zeila, Somalia

Post by Zubeir Awal 》 Sat Jan 14, 2012 12:05 pm

Zeila, city where the prophet's companions stopped and camped  ,hence the masjid with 2 qiblas facing Jerusalem and Mecca
Today rightly fully in the territory of the Islamic republic of Somaliland :sland:

Located on the Coast on the Northwestern part of Somaliland near to former French colony Djibouti, the port of Zeila is known for its beautiful natural setting: a large coral reef, mangroves as well as the cliffs and beaches surrounding the little port give Zeila a peculiar aspect.
With a population varying between 3,000 up to 7,000 in the cool season, it is a picturesque and cosmopolitan trading city since the 9th century, although Zeila port has been dethroned during the colonial time by French Somaliland port Djibouti and Southern Berbera port.
Inhabitant clans include the Habar Awal, and the Cisse who also inhabit Djbouti , In the past Zeila was the capital city of the Ifat sultanate, an influential power over the region from the 9th century on. It became a trade and learning hub in the 14th century, under the influence of Arab merchants settlement along the coast. The latter, supported by the coming of Muslim scholars from the Arabic peninsula, peacefully converted their trade partners to Islam. This is one of the ways Islam spread throughout Africa.
Later, Zeila was among the cities that flourished under the influence of Adal kingdom’s golden age with the construction of courtyards, mosques, shrines, and walled enclosures. The heyday was topped with the conquest of Christian Abyssinia in the 16th century. But it did not last and the Ethiopians eventually recouped the lost territories, leading to the displacement of Adal’s capital to Harar and the fall of Zeida.
Hardly anything remains of the old city since it was the bombed during the Somali civil war. Zeila hosts few tourists every year, who notably come for Scuba diving activities.
Formerly a British colony, Somaliland briefly reached its independence in 1960. It is one of the two main territories, with former Italian Somalia that compose the current State of Somalia.
Somaliland proclaimed its independence in 1991, adopting its own currency, a fully independent government, working institutions and police. The authorities organized a referendum in 2001, advocating once again for full independence. However, despite having control over 94% of its proclaimed borders ,it is not internationally recognized.

Tafsir Muyassar :

87  They were satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and their hearts were sealed over, so they do not understand.

88  But the Messenger and those who believed with him fought with their wealth and their lives. Those will have [all that is] good, and it is those who are the successful.

89  Allah has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. That is the great attainment.

90  And those with excuses among the bedouins came to be permitted [to remain], and they who had lied to Allah and His Messenger sat [at home]. There will strike those who disbelieved among them a painful punishment.

91  There is not upon the weak or upon the ill or upon those who do not find anything to spend any discomfort when they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger. There is not upon the doers of good any cause [for blame]. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

92  Nor [is there blame] upon those who, when they came to you that you might give them mounts, you said, "I can find nothing for you to ride upon." They turned back while their eyes overflowed with tears out of grief that they could not find something to spend [for the cause of Allah].

93  The cause [for blame] is only upon those who ask permission of you while they are rich. They are satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and Allah has sealed over their hearts, so they do not know.

Abu Mas'ud reported Allah's Messenger (way peace be upon him) as saying:

When a Muslim spends on his family seeking reward for it from Allah, it counts for him as sadaqa.

2. Indiana 2008  ... Islamic Center of Muncie, 5141 Hessler Rd, Muncie, IN 47304, USA. Richard McKinney, a former US marine plotted to blow the center, later revert to Islam

Richard McKinney has made an extraordinary life journey – from a US veteran who planned to bomb a mosque, to a Muslim who prays devoutly at the very Mosque he planned for 2 years to blow up. A veteran of the US Marines, Richard returned traumatised from combat in Afghanistan. That turned into a deep hatred of Islam. At his home in Muncie, Indiana, Richard was producing a device to blow up the town’s Mosque which he hoped will kill 200 people. But he decided to give the community he so hated ‘one more chance’. He visited the Islamic Centre, and was given a Koran to take home and read. Just eight weeks later, he had converted and within a few years he had become President of the very Mosque he yearned to destroy. Colm Flynn hears how Richard could have been one of America's most notorious mass murders, but is now a devout Muslim and advocate for peace and understanding.

Between the 1960s and 1973, the building hosted the Pentecostal "Miracle Revival Tabernacle Church." In 1973, students from the University of Pennsylvania's Muslim Student Association, along with NAIF, founded Masjid Al-Jamia in the building.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg picked ISGH as who they would sell the building to, despite a low selling price, quote, "so that the facility would continue as a place of worship[,]" instead of being torn down or used for a non-religious function. Notably, when moving into the building, the Harrisburg Diocese helped "replace the stained glass windows of the Stations of the Cross with stained glass panels of some of the ninety-nine names of God in Arabic."

It was heard from Abu 'Amr Shaibani that, pointing towards the house of Abdullah, he said:

The owner of this house told me that he asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): Which of the deeds are liked by Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Prayer at its proper time. I (again) said: What next? He replied: Then goodness to the parents. I (again) said: What then? He replied: Then Jihad in the cause of Allah. He ('Abdullah) said: This is what I was told (by the Holy Prophet). Had I questioned further, he would have made additions for me.

Sahih Muslim 2549 d - Book 44 - Hadith 7

Yazid b. Abu Habib reported that Na'im, the freed slave of Umm Salama, reported to him that 'Abdullah b. 'Amr b. 'As said:

There came to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) a person and said: I owe allegiance to you for migration and Jihad seeking reward only from Allah. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Is one from amongst your parents living? He said: Yes, of course, both are living. He further asked: Do you want to seek reward from Allah? He said: Yes. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Go back to your parents and accord them benevolent treatment.
