The Oldest Standing Mosque in USA since 1934.The Mother Mosque of America, Islamic Cultural & Heritage Center, 1335 Ninth St. N.W. Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52405

_______________________________________________

The Mother Mosque of America, once known as The Rose of Fraternity Lodge and also known as Moslem Temple, in Cedar Rapids, IowaUnited States, is the oldest standing purpose built mosque in the United States, since 1934

The mosque was built by a local community of immigrants and their descendants from what is now Lebanon and Syria.[3] Construction was completed February 15, 1934. The small structure served as a place of worship for Muslims for nearly 40 years. When a larger local mosque, the “Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids”, was built in 1971, the building was sold. Successive owners over the next 20 years allowed it to fall into disrepair.

The mosque seen from the northwest

In 1991 the Islamic Council of Iowa purchased the building, refurbished it and restored its status as a Muslim cultural center. The effort was mainly organized by the local Muslim community led by Imam Taha Tawil and Dr. Thomas B. Irving.

The Mother Mosque stands in a quiet neighborhood, flanked by houses on both sides, with a small marker off of First Avenue pointing the way to this historical site. Due to its small size, the majority of the Muslim population in Eastern Iowa and the Cedar Rapids area worship at other mosques, but the Mother Mosque remains a prominent center for information, prayer and community.

The Mother Mosque is listed on both the Iowa State Historical Register and the National Register of Historic Places as an "essential piece of American religious history, which symbolizes tolerance and acceptance of Islam and Muslims in the United States." It was listed on the National Register in 1996 as Moslem Temple.[1]

Floods in June 2008 filled the mosque's basement, destroying the extensive collection of books and archival records stored therein.

Tafsir Muyassar :

75  [Al-Khidh r] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?"

76  [Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse."

77  So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so al-Khidh r restored it. [Moses] said, "If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment."

78  [Al-Khidh r] said, "This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.

79  As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force.

80  And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief.

81  So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy.

82  And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience."

83  And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you about him a report."

76  Nabi Musa berkata: "Jika aku bertanya kepadamu tentang sebarang perkara sesudah ini, maka janganlah engkau jadikan daku sahabatmu lagi; sesungguhnya engkau telah cukup mendapat alasan-alasan berbuat demikian disebabkan pertanyaan-pertanyaan dan bantahanku".

75  [Al-Khidh r] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?"

76  [Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse."

76  Nabi Musa berkata: "Jika aku bertanya kepadamu tentang sebarang perkara sesudah ini, maka janganlah engkau jadikan daku sahabatmu lagi; sesungguhnya engkau telah cukup mendapat alasan-alasan berbuat demikian disebabkan pertanyaan-pertanyaan dan bantahanku".

Pepperell Counting House on Main Street in Biddeford. The first American mosque founded in 1915 was believed to be located on the second floor of this building.

Some sources assert that what is likely the first American mosque building was a mosque in Biddeford, Maine that was founded in 1915 by Albanian Muslims. A Muslim cemetery still existed there.

History of Muslims in Biddeford

The mill industry in the United States began recruiting employees in the Southern Mediterranean around 1900. Biddeford, ME hosted one of the main textile mills in New England, and mill owners were known to employ people who could create and weave various patterns and materials. So, the early 1900s brought to Southern Maine young Muslim men from Albania and Turkey.

The Turks were the first to arrive, and they worked in the York Manufacturing Co. in Saco (a neighboring town of Biddeford). The Albanians followed the immigration pattern and settled in the Pepperell Mills in Biddeford.

Coming to Maine without much money, not earning much in the mills, and wanting to send any extra earnings back home to their families, these young Turkish and Albanian men are believed to have stayed close to the mills. They even had their lodging in the mill campus.

As there was a group of Muslim men, they were able to maintain their religious obligations together, as a community. It is said that around 1915, the Muslim community was meeting for prayers. This signifies the formation of a very early mosque in Biddeford. While the exact location of the mosque is not verified, Charles Butler, Sr. of the Biddeford Historical Society and author of Images of America: Biddeford has solid speculation that the mosque met in the Pepperell Counting House on Main Street in Biddeford. The Pepperell Counting House was a part of the mill complex and was the building where mill workers were paid their wages. On the second floor of the building is a large meeting room which was used as a starter for various religious communities throughout the years. Butler suggests that it would make sense if the Muslims used this room as their prayer space since they spent all of their time living and working in the mills and even attending the Pepperell Technical School in the mill complex.

Muslim Burial Ground

Unfortunately, in 1918, the Spanish Flu swept through the area, killing many people in Biddeford, including several Muslims. The Muslim community organized to purchase a large plot in Biddeford’s Woodlawn Cemetery so that their community members could be buried near one another.

When visiting the cemetery today, it is noticeable that the tombstones in this part of the cemetery face a different direction than other sections of the cemetery. The Muslim burial ground has headstones facing Mecca. Some of the headstones have an engraving of the crescent and star that often symbolizes Islam. Other grave markers note that the deceased was an “Albanian Muhamedan”—meaning, a follower of the Prophet Mohammed.

After losing many Muslims to the Spanish flu, the Muslim community’s dynamic changed, and the mosque in Biddeford was not able to survive. It seems there was not enough of a critical mass of Muslims to keep the mosque active. Some Muslims returned to their country of origin. Their grandchildren have been in contact with Mr. Butler of the Biddeford Historical Society to try to learn about their grandfathers’ experiences in Maine.

In fact, one person contacted Butler regarding his grandfather, Tella Cahn, who lived and worked in the Pepperell mills. According to Cahn’s grandson, Cahn was one of the founders of the Biddeford mosque. Eventually, he moved out of the mills and became a grocer on Franklin Street in Biddeford. In 1928, he moved back to Albania and became a Commissioner of the first School of Muhamedan in Albania.

In the past several years, various people have tried to research this early Muslim community in Maine. Because the young men stayed so close to the mills, even living there, it is hard to trace their history—most are not registered in city directories or tax records, many did not get the chance to become U.S. citizens before they died, and further, the local paper did not report much, if anything, about the community. Some who did survive the Spanish flu and stayed in the area married local women. With the pressures of the time to blend into “American” society, one might wonder if they did not continue with their practice of Islam once married to a, most likely, Christian woman.

There are death records of a few of the Albanian men who worked in the mills and remained in the Biddeford area. While there is no mention of their religious background, the records do note that the deceased were born in Albania. One death record even notes that the deceased was a member of the York County Albania society, which may signify that the few Albanians continued to gather around their ethnic culture rather than the religion of their upbringing.

The Pepperell Counting House, the location of the Biddeford mosque, still stands today (now owned by WestPoint Stevens, Inc.). A current picture of the building can be seen in the photographs link at the top of the page.

Note: Thank you to Charles Butler, Sr. of the Biddeford Historical Society who provided research time and information for this profile.

Tafsir Muyassar :

62  So when they had passed beyond it, [Moses] said to his boy, "Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue."

63  He said, "Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot [there] the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan - that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly".

64  [Moses] said, "That is what we were seeking." So they returned, following their footprints.

65  And they found a servant from among Our servants to whom we had given mercy from us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge.

66  Moses said to him, "May I follow you on [the condition] that you teach me from what you have been taught of sound judgement?"

67  He said, "Indeed, with me you will never be able to have patience.

68  And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?"

69  [Moses] said, "You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in [any] order."

70  He said, "Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I make to you about it mention."

71  So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, al-Khidh r tore it open. [Moses] said, "Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing."

72  [Al-Khidh r] said, "Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?"

73  [Moses] said, "Do not blame me for what I forgot and do not cover me in my matter with difficulty."

74  So they set out, until when they met a boy, al-Khidh r killed him. [Moses] said, "Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing."

70  Ia menjawab: "Sekiranya engkau mengikutku, maka janganlah engkau bertanya kepadaku akan sesuatupun sehingga aku ceritakan halnya kepadamu".

70  Ia menjawab: "Sekiranya engkau mengikutku, maka janganlah engkau bertanya kepadaku akan sesuatupun sehingga aku ceritakan halnya kepadamu".

Kualitas Hadis

2. Indiana 2008  ... Islamic Center of Muncie, 5141 Hessler Rd, Muncie, IN 47304, USA. Richard McKinney, a former US marine plotted to blow the center, later revert to Islam

Richard McKinney has made an extraordinary life journey – from a US veteran who planned to bomb a mosque, to a Muslim who prays devoutly at the very Mosque he planned for 2 years to blow up. A veteran of the US Marines, Richard returned traumatised from combat in Afghanistan. That turned into a deep hatred of Islam. At his home in Muncie, Indiana, Richard was producing a device to blow up the town’s Mosque which he hoped will kill 200 people. But he decided to give the community he so hated ‘one more chance’. He visited the Islamic Centre, and was given a Koran to take home and read. Just eight weeks later, he had converted and within a few years he had become President of the very Mosque he yearned to destroy. Colm Flynn hears how Richard could have been one of America's most notorious mass murders, but is now a devout Muslim and advocate for peace and understanding.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg picked ISGH as who they would sell the building to, despite a low selling price, quote, "so that the facility would continue as a place of worship[,]" instead of being torn down or used for a non-religious function. It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

"Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim, and he who imparts knowledge to those who do not deserve it, is like one who puts a necklace of jewels, pearls and gold around the neck of swines."

(Durus Lisyaikh Abdil Aziz bin Baaz, 10/35)

Syaikh Shalih Alu Asy Syaikh menyebutkan bahwa ini adalah ucapan Imam Ahmad bin Hambal. (Qismul ‘Ilmi wad Da’wah, Hal. 1)
